Amsterdam
Canals reflecting golden light
Amsterdam's 17th-century Canal Ring, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, creates one of Europe's most distinctive urban landscapes: concentric semicircles of tree-lined canals flanked by narrow gabled houses that reflect in the water below. This canal network was built during the Dutch Golden Age and remains largely intact today. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum anchor the Museumplein cultural quarter, while the Jordaan neighborhood's narrow streets and independent shops offer quieter street photography. Dutch landscape photographer Albert Dros has demonstrated that Amsterdam's canal reflections can effectively double golden hour light. The bicycle culture — Amsterdam has more bikes than residents — provides a uniquely Dutch compositional element in virtually every frame.
