Athens

Ancient ruins in Mediterranean sun

12 photo experiences available

Athens is one of the world's oldest cities with a recorded history spanning approximately 3,400 years, and the Acropolis — crowned by the Parthenon (completed 432 BCE under the direction of Phidias) — remains its defining photographic subject. The surrounding Plaka and Anafiotika neighborhoods provide village-like street photography at the foot of ancient ruins, with bougainvillea-draped whitewashed houses that feel more like a Cycladic island than a capital city. The Monastiraki Flea Market and Central Market offer vibrant food and vendor scenes. Lycabettus Hill provides a 360-degree panoramic view of the city with the Acropolis illuminated at night. The Mediterranean light in Athens is reliably strong and warm for much of the year, making it one of the more forgiving European destinations for golden hour shooting.

Shooting tip: The Acropolis is best photographed from Filopappou Hill at sunset when it glows gold against the Attic sky.
