Cairo offers access to some of the most ancient and monumental photography subjects on Earth. The Great Pyramid of Giza (completed approximately 2560 BCE) and the Sphinx remain among the most photographed structures in human history. The city's Islamic quarter, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains one of the densest concentrations of medieval Islamic architecture in the world, including the Al-Azhar Mosque (founded 970 CE) and the Citadel of Saladin (built 1176–1183). The Khan el-Khalili bazaar, in continuous operation since the 14th century, provides vibrant street photography subjects. Clear desert skies mean golden hour is nearly guaranteed, and the warm directional light on sandstone creates deeply saturated tones.
