Dubrovnik

Adriatic walls and terracotta roofs

12 photo experiences available

Dubrovnik's medieval Old Town, enclosed by 2 kilometers of intact 13th-century stone walls, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that many photographers find almost impossibly photogenic. The city's terracotta rooftops, viewed from the surrounding walls or the Srdj hill cable car, create a warm monochromatic palette against the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea. The Stradun (main street) connects the Pile Gate to the Old Port through a corridor of polished limestone that gleams in afternoon light. International recognition surged after Dubrovnik served as the filming location for King's Landing in HBO's Game of Thrones (2011–2019), though the city's photographic appeal long predates the series. The Lokrum island, a short ferry ride from the Old Port, offers elevated views back toward the walled city. Shoulder season visits are strongly recommended — cruise ship crowds in July and August can make the narrow streets difficult to photograph. Our packing list covers essential gear for Adriatic light conditions.

Walled City Adriatic Panoramic Medieval Best: May–Jun, Sep–Oct
Shooting tip: Walk the full 2km city wall circuit starting at Pile Gate — the first hour after opening (typically 8 AM) offers uncrowded elevated views.
